Does Astrology work?
Many people don't care a bit what astrology is or what it can really do? But there are hundreds who do believe that it can do wonders and can help solving personal or any kind of problems. They also hold that it can show them some way to reach their goals. Well, does astrology really work is a thousand dollar question? The astrologers of the past had a motto, which they reflected boldly in their books on astrology. "The stars incline, they do not compel". In other words under the influence of the planets, one may feel tired but that planetary influence cannot force one to drive a car or make one fell asleep while driving a car.
In fact, people believe in astrology for more than 3000 years. But they are quite capable of believing something silly for thousand years, until they are proven wrong. Even if they are proven wrong, some of them will go on believing their silly theories. Yes, it is a proven fact that astrology works, but not the way most people think it does. Perhaps it is the biggest mistake of the people to reckon that astrology can do impossible like foretelling someone future very accurately. The ancient Indian astrologers did have a great depth in this respect as they were able to foretell one's future to a great extent, but at the same time there are examples from the legends that cast doubt on that sort of belief. Many events that took place in Sri Ram's life happened unexpectedly although the great saga Vishwamitra was one of the leading astrologers and the guru of the day and astrology was also quite rampant during those days.
Still astrology works. Not by telling you what is actually going to happen as it is not that simple to tell, but by indicating what possibly may happen. No sane astrologer will claim that he or she can foretell everything very accurately about one's future. Even then astrology works. It works within simple limits. There may be plenty of arguments about just how clearly astrology can see into the future, but there is no doubt about one simple fact that any good astrologer can see something. A practising astrologer can tell you when you will feel particularly romantic or when you may be careless enough to meet an accident or even when you will have very hard times relating to your finances or family. Roughly, one can also calculate what shall be one's peak years of life or even when one may get married or when possibly one's death (markesh yoga) may occur.
Truly speaking there is practically no area in which astrology cannot be helpful. There is no area of life to which astrology cannot be usefully applied to starting from birth right through one's retirement. It would not be true to state that wherever human life is, so also astrology. As you go through this book, you will gradually be more convinced of that. Since we are mainly concentrating on the trikonas in this book, we will primarily deal with the matters relating to the three houses or angles we call Trikona. These three angles or houses are the first house or the ascendant, the fifth house and the ninth house. The reader may get confused to identify which is the fifth or the ninth house in a chart. Traditionally, Indian astrologers reckon the houses anti-clockwise. Therefore, the house, which is counted as the fifth from the ascendant, is the fifth house whereas the house counted as the ninth from the ascendant, is considered to be the ninth house.
We implore the reader to read our previous book on astrology-Explore the Power of Astrology. It is not only very informative and throws light on various unsolved astrological matters, but it also helps one to understand the basics which are highly imperative to learn astrology from the beginning. The current effort is a stepping stone to enlightening the reader and to make him/her understand certain important astrological matters relating to the three houses that can bestow beneficial or devastating effects on a person subject to the placement of their owners in a chart (kundali). We shall analyze a good number of charts for the benefit of the reader after we have discussed the characteristics and effects of these three houses separately. But before we begin our discussions on the trikonas, we would
like the reader to understand the nature and importance of the 12 zodiac rising signs to which certain major qualities are associated. When the Sun enters these zodiac signs after each month, it does take those qualities.
In fact, the Sun is the most powerful planet astrologically as it actually bestows different characteristics in an individual. When the Sun transits different zodiac signs, it governs different characteristics. Therefore, the position of the Sun in a birth chart governs one's individuality, distinctive style and the drives to fulfil one's goals. J. M. Woolfolk reckons that your horoscope is a painting of you. The characteristics of your Sun sign are the broad strokes that the artist first lays down on the canvas. The artist outlines your general shape, the planes and the angles of your face, the way in which you hold your body. In the same manner the Sun signs determine your general character. How do you deal with your responsibility? Are you easy going or persistently follow the life's goals? Answers of many of these questions may be found to a great extent in your Sun sign. (8: pp.3-4)
